Resources In And Around Charlottesville

Charlottesville, VA

CHARLOTTESVILLE DEPARTMENT OF RECREATION AND LEISURE SERVICES: (804) 970-3260

Recreation and Leisure offers a booklet listing their classes and upcoming special activities. It also shows the location of the many wonderful parks within our boundaries. Call for your free copy, and to be put on the mailing list for this seasonal booklet. I personally recommend the gymnastic classes, any art class taught by Joy Utzinger, and the ice skating classes. All classes are subsidized by the city, so the price is very reasonable. Residents of other localities pay slightly more. Scholarships are available for both city and county residents.

Also, for city residents, the Free Ride ID Program allows youth to ride city buses at no charge between June 15th and August 30th. Your kids get a photo ID that looks like a driver’s license. Call 970-3267 for information on how to get a pass. This is normally done through the schools but there are locations where homeschoolers can get the ID. We had a great time last year bus hopping as we learned about mass transportation.

PIEDMONT COUNCIL OF THE ARTS: (804) 971-ARTS

Family Calendars are available through the libraries with listings of concerts, plays, and a great variety of art activities in our area. Free. It’s amazing how many activities are available to us.
